637 Utrecht Armchair by Gerrit Rietveld

Designer: Gerrit Thomas Rietveld

Cassina

Director: Pedro Almodóvar

As unique and cutting-edge as ever, it’s hard to believe the 637 Utrecht Armchair by Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld is over 70 years old.

Revolutionary for its time, this vibrant sculptural armchair continues to turn heads today.

Originally designed in 1935, it stood out heads and shoulders from the stuffy lounge chairs of the time with it’s sharp angles and surprising ergonomics.

The backrest and seat meet at the floor, from which parallel armrests morph upwards as stylish supports for tired arms. Energising and eccentric, it’s remained a classic ever since its inception, and can be relied upon to inject fresh life into lacklustre living spaces.

Available in a wide variety of fabric colours and types.

We spotted two 637 Utrecht Armchairs (in orange and red) in Almodovar’s Pain and Glory and (in blue) in Broken Embraces.
