🔮 The future is coming back. With Blade Runner 20 🔮 The future is coming back.

With Blade Runner 2049 currently topping the streaming charts on Prime Video, and the new series Blade Runner 2099 heading our way, it feels like the perfect moment to return to one of cinema’s most extraordinary design worlds.

Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner (1982) gave us a future created from layers of architecture, furniture and objects, from the ‘Blade Runner glass’ by Cini Boeri (available to buy from our marketplace - link in bio) and the Frank Lloyd Wright Ennis House-inspired textile blocks of Deckard’s apartment to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Argyle chair and other pieces of real-world early 20th-century design that somehow looked perfectly at home in Los Angeles, 2019.

Thirty-five years later, Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, with production design by Dennis Gassner, expanded that visual language into a vast, atmospheric world of monumental architecture, brutalist interiors and carefully chosen design, including one of our favourites, the Pierre Paulin Ribbon chair.

Now, with Blade Runner 2099 set to take us further into that universe, we’re revisiting some of the design details that helped make the original film and its sequel so enduring.

Swipe through for a trip from 2019 to 2049, before we head into 2099.

The obsession with Obsession continues. Curry Bar The obsession with Obsession continues.

Curry Barker’s horror film has become one of the year’s extraordinary success stories, turning a reported $750,000 budget into more than $420 million at the global box office. Its premise is deceptively simple: Bear makes a wish that his crush Nikki will love him more than anyone else, and gets far more than he bargained for.

One of the smartest things is how its production design grounds the increasingly deranged story in very ordinary places.

Bear’s inherited home has the slightly airless feeling of a house whose previous owner never really left. Dark wood, patterned walls, old furniture, deep shadows create a stifling domestic familiarity. As Nikki’s behaviour becomes increasingly disturbing, those everyday rooms begin to feel less and less safe.

Horror takes hold in bedrooms, hallways, a music shop, a restaurant and a suburban home. That sense of normal life becoming corrupted from within has a big part to play on the sense of unease.

And then there’s the One Wish Willow, the strange little object at the centre of it all. A piece of production design small enough to hold in your hand, yet powerful enough to set the entire story in motion. Like the best objects in film, it takes on a life far beyond its physical scale.

Production design is by Vivian Gray, with art direction by Sally Choi. Gray and her team created a world where the supernatural feels disturbingly close to the everyday.

Quite the result for a film that began life on such a modest budget.

Obsession is now available to rent or buy in the UK via Prime Video, Apple TV and Sky Store, and is streaming on Peacock in the US.

SUNDAY SOFAS Sofas in Film and TV No.3: The Yorgos SUNDAY SOFAS
Sofas in Film and TV No.3: The Yorgos Lanthimos edition

In the films of Yorgos Lanthimos, interiors can be austere, opulent, fantastical or unnervingly ordinary, but they are always an essential part of the storytelling.

His sofas are just as varied. Severe and imposing, grand and upholstered, strange and sensual, or so familiar and domestic that their surroundings become all the more unsettling. Across these wildly different worlds, furniture helps define status, relationships and mood, while grounding the peculiar logic in which his characters live.

Here are ten sofas from the wonderfully warped worlds of Yorgos Lanthimos.

We’ve had our first look at the Digger trailer, Al We’ve had our first look at the Digger trailer, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s new “comedy of catastrophic proportions”, starring a heavily transformed Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a wildly wealthy oil baron who unleashes a global disaster and then sets about proving he can save humanity from it.

And from the trailer, we’re getting distinct tinges of Dr. Strangelove.

There’s the manic collision of extreme wealth, political power and looming catastrophe, along with a gloriously strange visual world that moves from military command rooms to the rarefied absurdity of Digger’s sprawling mansion.

Naturally, we’ve been looking at the interiors.

The first images give us an extraordinary glimpse inside Rockwell’s billionaire bubble, where almost every object broadcasts wealth, power, conquest and ego. There’s the vast, ornate bed, an extraordinary mirror engulfed in antlers, a monumental fireplace with bull-skull metalwork, a polar bear rug and, for the favoured feline, a rather magnificent tiered cat house.

Then there’s the boardroom, dominated by an enormous crystal chandelier and a vast mural celebrating the machinery and muscle of industry - a monument to the business that made Rockwell rich, even as the consequences of that business come crashing down around him.

What we're seeing so far are interiors of old-money grandeur, trophy-room excess and industrial self-mythology.

Cruise looks like he’s having fun with the part, surrounded by a cast including Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons and John Goodman.

Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and we know we're in very safe hands with the production design and set decoration with Dennis Gassner @dennis.gassner
and Anna Pinnock (@pinnock57). Digger was shot in VistaVision by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.

We’ll be keeping a very close eye on those interiors.

Digger is in cinemas from October 2026.
