The Shining rugs and carpets: inspiration from our customers’ interiors. Plus a Halloween offer
The Shining carpets inspire a devotion few film furnishings can match. Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror masterpiece is a cult classic with some exceptionally good carpets. From home cinemas to offices and hotels, these designs offer a bold way to cement your appreciation of one of cinema’s greatest films.
Hicks Hexagon’s interlocking geometry, Room 237’s green and purple curves and the Gold Room’s exuberant pattern are instantly recognisable to fellow cinephiles. Spotting them in someone’s home is a pleasing discovery: you’re clearly in good company.
At Film and Furniture, we supply officially licensed luxury rugs and carpets as seen in The Shining, with options including hand-tufted wool rugs and carpet, and printed nylon wall-to-wall carpet. From a freestanding area rug to a custom runner or an entire carpeted corridor, there are plenty of ways to give a favourite film a permanent place in your interiors.
Our customers have generously shared photographs of their Film and Furniture rugs and carpets in situ, showing how these much-loved designs bring personal spaces to life. Take a snoop around with us, pick up some styling ideas and, if you’re tempted to roll out your own piece of cinema history, you’ll find a Halloween offer at the end.
Games rooms, music rooms and collectors’ rooms

Our clients’ games rooms and music rooms are often filled to the brim with vinyl, DVD box sets, framed posters and film memorabilia. We approve. These are spaces for indulging your enthusiasms, and a rug from The Shining collection makes a fitting foundation.

Hicks Hexagon works splendidly against wooden floors, bringing warmth, pattern and a clear sense of territory. In a room that accommodates a pool table, record collection and television, a rug can define the seating area or create a dedicated listening corner. Pull up a chair, choose a record or film, and settle in.

Plain upholstery or leather gives the eye somewhere to rest, while the rug holds its own among instruments, books and collected treasures. Vintage wooden cabinets pick up Hicks Hexagon’s warm tones. There’s more than one way to furnish a film obsession.

For collectors, Hicks Hexagon and Room 237 provide suitably cinematic settings for these gatherings of film figures, including the Grady twins and an unexpected guest, Kermit. We have questions…
Statement flooring

A bold rug can give an otherwise restrained interior a completely different energy. For the owner of this clean-lined, contemporary space, a Hicks Hexagon runner and Room 237 rug introduce colour and pattern while defining the corridor and living area. Against monochrome artworks and a white Barcelona chair, the floor becomes a major part of the composition. Using different designs in adjoining spaces also gives each area its own character. Their shared cinematic connection supplies the thread running through the home.
Home theatres and independent cinemas: set the scene before the opening titles

Hicks Hexagon is a particularly satisfying choice for a cinema, whether a public space or private home theatre.
A dedicated screening room deserves surroundings that make film night feel like an occasion. The rug or carpet gives this one character before the projector comes on, and a rather good talking point when the lights come up.
For our client in Park City, Utah, we created a bespoke monochrome version for a cinema conceived as a grand homage to The Shining. The grey-and-black palette keeps the floor visually restrained during screenings, while retaining the unmistakable geometry. Against red wall panels which echo the Overlook, and dark grey cinema seating, it makes a striking variation on a familiar design.

At the Nightlight, the independent cinema in Akron, Ohio, our Hicks Hexagon printed nylon carpet puts a love of film on display beyond the auditorium. It provides a memorable setting for gatherings and a distinctive backdrop for filmed conversations and visitors’ reactions. Even in a short social clip, those hexagons are hard to miss.
Make an entrance

Corridors and entrance halls are among the most popular settings for our runners. Given Danny’s journeys around the Overlook on his tricycle, the appeal is easy to understand. You can almost hear the wheels rumbling over the hard floor, then softening as they reach the carpet.

A runner can announce your love of film at the front door.
Our customers’ photographs show Hicks Hexagon in its original orange, red and dark brown palette and in a brighter custom colourway. In these two very different homes, the runners sit beautifully alongside warm wooden doors and colourful contemporary artwork. The repeating geometry draws the eye along each corridor, making a feature of its length.
A guest suite with Room 237 credentials

Our Room 237 carpet brings its flowing green and purple pattern into this guest suite, where a bespoke recreation of a desk from the film makes a handsome companion.
Made in luxurious hand-tufted 1-ply wool, this example features carving along the pattern boundaries. The sculpted detailing gives the design crisp definition and a tactile, three-dimensional quality, particularly noticeable where the light catches the pile.
It’s a generous way to give guests a room with character. Whether you choose to mention its cinematic origins before bedtime is entirely up to you.
Home offices and creative workplaces
Your working surroundings can say as much about you as your bookshelves.

In this home office, the Room 237 rug brings colour and movement beneath a substantial desk. Its curves play against the furniture’s straight lines, while the green curtains carry the palette upwards. A telescope, books and personal objects complete a room that makes space for its owner’s interests as well as the working day.

These designs work equally well beyond the home. At Creative Outpost, Hicks Hexagon gives the office reception and lounge a strong identity, paired with teal upholstery, vintage furniture and warm lighting. It’s a convivial setting for conversation, with a carpet that reveals something about the company’s creative appetite.
Home bars: a drink with a cinematic pedigree
From a kitchen counter to a basement bar, The Shining rugs make a splendid setting for a drink. Whisky on the rocks would seem appropriate. Lloyd the bartender is not included.

One New Jersey client chose an 8 × 10 ft rug for a basement home bar, cementing a love of the film in a space that naturally serves Jack Daniel’s.

In Florida, the Gold Room design brings a touch of Overlook glamour to a kitchen counter. The stools’ brass-coloured frames echo the rug’s golden tones, while their brown upholstery adds richness. It’s a considered pairing that works just as well for morning coffee as an evening drink.

Some clients take their film-inspired interiors considerably further. For our clients’ Avalon Lounge in Atlanta, interior designer Jennelle Derricotte commissioned our Hicks Hexagon carpet with reversed colours and a customised pattern scale. Their extraordinary entertainment space is a recreation of the bar aboard the spaceship in Passengers, complete with gold curved seating, elaborate Art Deco detailing and a grand piano.

A recording studio for a well-known voice

When actor and film fan Sean Pertwee created a home recording studio for voice-over work, Hicks Hexagon was his first choice. Known for playing Alfred Pennyworth in Gotham and Sergeant Wells in Dog Soldiers, Pertwee also has an extensive voice-over career. His rug gives the working space a personal connection to cinema, with the familiar pattern taking centre stage beneath his recording chair.
Pets approve

Even pets like to get in on the action, and several have claimed their places on The Shining rugs. Our client’s black cat makes a particularly convincing addition to the colour scheme while dogs seem more intent in claiming the best spot. Every personal space needs someone to test the arrangements.
Styling tips for The Shining rugs and carpets
Our customers’ rooms offer plenty of ideas for making these patterns work in your own space:
Give the pattern room to work. Plain-coloured upholstery on sofas and chairs allows the rug’s geometry to remain visible, while leaving space for artwork and collected objects.
Make friends with timber. Wooden floors and vintage furniture sit particularly well with Hicks Hexagon’s warm orange and red.
Zoning. A rug can bring a seating group together, mark out a listening corner or distinguish the lounge from the games area.
Pick up colours elsewhere in the room. Purple or green accessories or artworks with Room 237, brass-coloured details with Gold Room or red, orange or black/dark brown with Hicks Hexagon can connect the floor to the rest of the scheme.
