Last month we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and last year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese and all of us at Film and Furniture have often cited 2001: A Space Odyssey as being one of our favourite films of all time. We were therefore very interested to hear that New York’s Museum of the Moving Image will be honouring this masterpiece by staging an exhibition titled simply “Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’”. This act of devotion to one of the most influential pieces of filmmaking will open on January 18, 2020.

The 1968 film, directed by Kubrick and developed in collaboration with writer Arthur C. Clarke, depicts the fraught relationship between humanity and technology, using pioneering special effects. The exhibition will include original artifacts from international collections and from the Stanley Kubrick Archive at the University of the Arts London, as well as from the Museum’s own collection. 

In addition to exploring Kubrick’s influences, his obsessive research, and his innovative production process, the exhibition will look at the film’s widespread influence on cinema, design, painting, architecture, and advertising.  

Throughout its six-month run at MoMI, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey will be accompanied by a wide variety of screenings, public programmes with guest speakers, and specially themed workshops, tours, special events, and more.
