Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser

Director: Sofia Coppola

The acclaimed biography by historian Antonia Fraser that inspired Sofia Coppola’s visually sumptuous 2006 film Marie Antoinette, starring Kirsten Dunst.

Fraser explores the extraordinary life of the young Austrian princess who became Queen of France, from her arrival at the lavish court of Versailles to the turmoil of the French Revolution. Moving beyond the familiar tales of extravagance, scandal and the notorious (and misattributed) phrase ‘Let them eat cake’, she paints a nuanced and compassionate portrait of a young woman navigating royal expectations, political intrigue and intense public scrutiny.

Rich in historical detail, Marie Antoinette: The Journey offers a fascinating insight into the woman behind the legend and the world of privilege, ritual and grandeur that Coppola brought so vividly to the screen.
