Coupé wall light by Joe Colombo
Designer: Joe Colombo
Oluce
Joe Colombo’s Coupé series, designed in 1967 for Oluce, is a masterclass in pared-back ingenuity. The elegant wall light version of this design can be spotted on the testing floor in Severance.
Originally conceived as a variation of Colombo’s earlier Spider lamp, the Coupé retains the same base and stem but introduces a brilliantly simple mechanism: a slender arch that connects the stem to the lamp head, allowing the dome to be moved up, down and sideways. This gives the lamp remarkable flexibility, directing light exactly where it’s needed while keeping the profile elegant and minimal.
The Coupé quickly earned international recognition, winning the 1968 “International Design Award” from the American Institute of Interior Designers in Chicago, and is now held in the permanent collections of MoMA in New York and the Neue Sammlung in Munich.
Available as a table lamp, wall light, or floor lamp, with a choice of semi-cylindrical or semi-spherical domes, Coupé is a versatile piece of modernist design history that still feels utterly contemporary.
