Does the decor in The Residence - the Netflix new

Does the decor in The Residence - the Netflix new murder-mystery series set within the halls of the White House- have you hooked or repelled? 😳 From the Blue Room’s rich blue-and-gold extravagance to the intense clash of patterns that feel like a design dare, this show doesn’t hold back.

Behind the bold wallpaper and over-the-top details, there’s a whole lot of craftsmanship going on to replicate the real White House. Production Designer François Audouy and his team meticulously designed, sourced, and crafted some 70-plus rooms with jaw-dropping precision (and a sprinkling of artistic license) — we’re talking every gilded piece, intricate pattern, and over-the-top opulence you could imagine - including the Blue Room furniture: Gilded beechwood by Pierre-Antoine Bellangé of Paris which were purchased during the James Monroe administration for the real life White House.

At the heart of the The Substance is Elizabeth’s apartment—a vast yet sparsely furnished space that reflects her loneliness and detachment from the world. As her psychological state deteriorates and Sue begins to take over, so does the space around her. The luxurious peach velvet bed cover transforms into dark midnight blue satin (a top shot influenced by American Beauty, 1999 - pic 4), the sleek modern chairs are replaced by a worn-out armchair from which she watches TV all day - the latter and several other scenes are a nod to Requiem for a Dream (2000) - pics 6&7. These subtle shifts in furniture and decor mirror her internal unraveling.

A visually arresting film set in The Substance is the clinical, white-tiled bathroom, heavily inspired by Jean-Pierre Raynaud.

“Coralie [Fargeat] wanted something common yet unsettling—a bathroom that could exist anywhere but felt strangely off. We used 20cm x 20cm white tiles everywhere, even on the ceiling,” explains production designer Stanislas Reydellet.

The rigid square geometry of the tiles is reflected in the sink, bathtub, and lighting, reinforcing the sense of order and sterility.

“The bathroom acts almost like a lightbox—a bright, clinical space that reveals everything,” he adds. “It was a technically challenging set, as every wall and ceiling panel had to be movable to accommodate the camera angles Coralie wanted.”

Elizabeth/Sues Apartment in The Substance
At the heart of the film is Elizabeth/Sue's apartment—a vast yet sparsely furnished space that reflects her loneliness and detachment from the world.

“The idea was to position Elizabeth at the top of society, almost like she’s on a hill, with the rest of the world beneath her,” production designer Stanislas Reydellet, explains. “Everything in her home is a reflection of her past life—but it’s deliberately out of time, blending influences from the 1940s to the 1990s.”

The apartment’s lack of personal possessions reinforces her sense of disconnection. “Coralie Fargeat wanted emptiness, just a few objects that serve the action and then disappear. The space itself had to feel vast yet isolating.”

As Elizabeth’s psychological state deteriorates, so does the space around her. These subtle shifts in furniture and decor mirror her internal unraveling.

The striking blue sculpture on the sideboard is a lamp with blue glass blades, rented from an antique flea dealer in Saint Ouen, and you can find the murano glass table lamp, sofas and armchairs, and dining chair on our website soon!

If you thought the TV studio men's room in The Sub

If you thought the TV studio men's room in The Substance looked familiar, you were absolutely right… It’s a direct homage to The Shining! 🎬✨

Production designer Stanislas Reydellet confirmed in our recent interview that the space was deliberately inspired by the famous Gold Room red bathroom in The Shining, something that Director Coralie Fargeat was keen to explore—a place of eerie tension and psychological unease.

🎨 A Perfectly Chosen Location
Unlike most of the film’s custom-built sets, this bathroom was an existing location in Paris. With minor modifications, it became an unsettling space in The Substance.

🌊 How the Design Mirrors The Shining
🔴 Red doors & accents – Evoking the iconic confrontation scene between Jack Torrance and Delbert Grady.
🔲 Stark monochrome tiles – Heightening the clinical, almost surreal atmosphere.
📺 A Space of Power & Unease - Much like Kubrick’s vision, The Substance uses this bathroom as a psychological battleground, where power and identity blur in unsettling ways.
