Journey into the heart of Game of Thrones’ Winterfell, Dragonstone, Vaes Dothrak in Northern Ireland

Journey into the heart of Game of Thrones’ Winterfell, Dragonstone, Vaes Dothrak in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland, one of the key filming locations for HBO’s Game of Thrones series has really gone to town on marketing themselves around the hugely successful, highly addictive TV series. Given the jaw dropping scenery, I am very tempted to visit.

You can explore all the main filming locations and embark on 4-day self-drive tour which brings you right into the bloody heart of the Seven Kingdoms. Or follow the Filming Locations Cycle Trail directed by Game of Thrones signposts and take guided tours around iconic sites rooted in myth and legend. Stay in the woods in the grounds of Winterfell Castle aka Castle Ward and play archery on a range faithfully re-created exactly as the movie set in the courtyard. You can also re-live the feast the Starks held in honor of Robert Baratheon, before relationships disintegrated and heads began to roll.

Castle Black: Carved into the limestone face of Magheramore Quarry, County Antrim, is Castle Black. Home to the Night’s Watch, the ancient order that guards the Wall, it was also used to recreate the fishing village, Hardhome.

Winterfell is where the deadly Game of Thrones is set in motion. One of the most iconic locations in the Seven Kingdoms, the 820-acre walled demesne of Castle Ward, County Down, provided a prime location for House Stark.
