The Wood Chair by Marc Newson
Designer: Marc Newson
Cappellini
Designed by Marc Newson as a commissioned piece for a Crafts Council exhibition, Wood Chair was first made using Canadian rock maple and Australia coachwood and is a good example of Marc’s desire to push the limits of the material. The chair consists of slatted beech wood strips steam bent to form a ‘double curve’ or ‘alpha’ shape.
The backrest extends down, around and back to form the seat and supports, the strips strengthened with horizontal bracing at each end and at three points around the curve of the seat.
Cappellini put the Wood Chair into production with some modifications: the angle of the seat back was more reclined and beech hardwood replaced the Tasmanian pine.
