ES106 Soft Pad Eames Chaise
Designer: Charles and Ray Eames
Vitra
Director: Billy Wilder
Designed by Charles Eames for a specific person and purpose, the ES106 Soft Pad Eames Chaise was created for director Billy Wilder. Eames knew Wilder liked to nap between takes — but not for too long. During a 1955 film location scout to Newfoundland, Eames observed Wilder’s lighthouse-keeper-style naps on a narrow plank of wood. His solution was a narrow, perfectly angled chaise that allowed rest without total surrender to sleep. Practical, intelligent and unmistakably modern.
Wilder’s interest in furniture ran deep. Having lived in Berlin, he was well aware of Bauhaus thinking and the cultural shift towards modernism — a sensibility that found a natural counterpart in the work of Charles and Ray Eames.
