Designers in Film No. 7: Arne Jacobsen

A look at some of Arne Jacobsen's most enduring designs on screen.

Arne Jacobsen Cutlery (1957) (pics 1&2). Designed more than a decade before 2001: A Space Odyssey, yet it still looked like the future when Kubrick put it on board the Discovery One spacecraft. The same sleek stainless steel cutlery also appears in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The Egg Chair (1958). One of the great achievements of Scandinavian design. Created for the SAS Royal Hotel, its sculptural form provides both privacy and comfort. Spotted in the Danish-Swedish crime drama The Bridge and The Beatles' Help! (pics 3-4).

The Series 7 Chair (1955). Arguably Jacobsen's most recognisable design. Lightweight, elegant and endlessly versatile. Seen in The Playlist, The Uninvited, The Father, Conversations with Friends and Sentimental Value (pics 5-8).

The AJ Table Lamp (1957). Originally designed for Copenhagen's SAS Royal Hotel. Its angled shade and clean lines made it a modernist classic. Seen in No Time To Die, where it sits in Q's house, and in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, appearing in both Pike's Ready Room and M'Benga's Sick Bay (pics 9-10).

More than seventy years after many of these designs first appeared, they continue to feel remarkably current, whether on a film set, a starship or around a dining table.

🎬 Film and Furniture's picks from Bonhams' Sound & Cinema Auction 🎬

Following the recent passing of Terence Stamp, Bonhams' forthcoming Sound & Cinema auction includes pieces from the acclaimed actor's personal collection, offering a rare glimpse into his distinctive taste in art, design and interiors.

From a handwoven rug with a remarkable Hollywood backstory to vintage film posters and furniture with real character, there's plenty to tempt lovers of cinema and design in the upcoming sale.

Among our favourites is Terence Stamp's large geometric floor rug, handwoven by actress Silvana Mangano in the 1970s or 1980s and accompanied by Polaroids showing Mangano lying on the rug while it was still on the loom. It is offered alongside a collection of cushions and an Hermès blanket from Stamp's collection.

We're also drawn to a beautifully sculptural Chinese hardwood "Moongazing" recliner chair dating from the late Qing Dynasty.

Film enthusiasts can also bid on a British souvenir programme for Metropolis, a striking US one sheet poster for Rear Window, an original French poster for Mon Oncle, sixteen cut-glass white wine glasses from Downton Abbey, and a signed archival print of Terence Stamp and Jean Shrimpton by photographer Terry O'Neill.

The auction begins closing from 25 June 2026. If you're after a piece with a story to tell, this catalogue is well worth a look.

Carol's beautifully considered Santa Fe-inspired h

Carol's beautifully considered Santa Fe-inspired home in Pluribus caught our eye, with its plaster walls, arched doorways, woven lighting, handcrafted tiles and cane dining chairs, to frozen ice hotels, hospitals, bespoke aircraft interiors and an entire neighbourhood built from scratch. It's packed with remarkable production design and interiors inspiration.

For us, though, the undisputed star is Carol's house. Inspired by contemporary Southwestern architecture, it combines warm stucco walls, black steel-framed glazing, artisan tilework, woven pendants, cane dining chairs and layered natural textures to create a home that feels sophisticated without trying too hard. Every detail was carefully considered, from the custom finishes and bespoke furnishings to the artwork and colour palette, all chosen to reflect Carol's personality and way of life.

The house didn't simply occupy an existing street either. Denise Pizzini and her team selected an empty mesa overlooking Albuquerque, built roads into the site and constructed an entire custom neighbourhood around it, positioning each home to make the most of the spectacular New Mexico views while giving every property its own distinct identity.

As the Set Decorators Society of America announces its Television Awards nominations for 2025-2026, we're taking a look at one of the year's most ambitious achievements in television décor and design. The nomination for Best Achievement in Décor/Design of a One Hour Contemporary Series recognises Set Decorator Ashley Michelle Marsh SDSA alongside Production Designer Denise Pizzini.

Margo's "collegiate thrift store" home, features mismatched rugs, quirky ornaments, fake ferns, vintage finds and budget furniture. The gloriously oversized pink sofa steals the show, bringing a burst of maximalist glamour to an otherwise cash-strapped apartment. As Margo's online alter ego grows in confidence, the sets explode into colourful DIY creations filled with cyberpunk lighting and homemade props, mirroring the changing direction of her life.
