We’ve had our first look at the Digger trailer, Al

We’ve had our first look at the Digger trailer, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s new “comedy of catastrophic proportions”, starring a heavily transformed Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a wildly wealthy oil baron who unleashes a global disaster and then sets about proving he can save humanity from it.

And from the trailer, we’re getting distinct tinges of Dr. Strangelove.

There’s the manic collision of extreme wealth, political power and looming catastrophe, along with a gloriously strange visual world that moves from military command rooms to the rarefied absurdity of Digger’s sprawling mansion.

Naturally, we’ve been looking at the interiors.

The first images give us an extraordinary glimpse inside Rockwell’s billionaire bubble, where almost every object broadcasts wealth, power, conquest and ego. There’s the vast, ornate bed, an extraordinary mirror engulfed in antlers, a monumental fireplace with bull-skull metalwork, a polar bear rug and, for the favoured feline, a rather magnificent tiered cat house.

Then there’s the boardroom, dominated by an enormous crystal chandelier and a vast mural celebrating the machinery and muscle of industry - a monument to the business that made Rockwell rich, even as the consequences of that business come crashing down around him.

What we're seeing so far are interiors of old-money grandeur, trophy-room excess and industrial self-mythology.

Cruise looks like he’s having fun with the part, surrounded by a cast including Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons and John Goodman.

Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and we know we're in very safe hands with the production design and set decoration with Dennis Gassner @dennis.gassner
and Anna Pinnock (@pinnock57). Digger was shot in VistaVision by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.

We’ll be keeping a very close eye on those interiors.

Digger is in cinemas from October 2026.

Outlander has spent eight seasons transporting us

Outlander has spent eight seasons transporting us through some of television's most beautifully realised historic interiors, from the candlelit rooms of Lallybroch and the grandeur of Versailles to Jamie and Claire's rugged cabin in North Carolina.

Every setting is layered with furniture, paintings, glassware and decorative objects created to bring centuries of history to life. Hand-painted apothecary jars, Jamie and Claire's well-used copper chamberstick, delicate hand-blown wine goblets and a Rococo-framed still life after the 17th-century Flemish artist Frans Snyders are the sort of details many viewers may never consciously notice, yet they give every room its authenticity and character.

With the series now complete, many of those original props and furnishings are finding a new home. Bonhams is giving fans the rare opportunity to see hundreds of original costumes and props up close at a free London exhibition before they go under the hammer in live and online auctions this August.

As we count down to the 6th Annual SDSA Television Awards on 9 August, Outlander is among the nominees for Best Achievement in Décor/Design of a One Hour Period Series, recognising the work of Set Decorator Stuart Bryce alongside Production Designer Mike Gunn.

Whether you're inspired by Highland simplicity, Parisian opulence or colonial craftsmanship, Outlander remains a masterclass in storytelling through furniture and décor.

When a film opens with someone rolling out a new rug in their apartment, you know you're in Film and Furniture territory.

Olivia Wilde's The Invite understands that our homes reveal who we are.

Before the story has even begun, Angela is bringing home willow branches for the décor. There are conversations about paint swatches and rugs, renovating a bathroom so it doesn't look renovated, and countless small decorating decisions that anyone obsessed with interiors will instantly recognise.

Production Designer Jade Healy creates Angela and Joe's San Francisco apartment as considered and styled, yet it also adds to the tension. Every room hints at someone trying to create the perfect life, even as cracks begin to appear.

Soft blue-grey walls, framed by generous white cased openings, inherited-looking artwork, and shelves lined with books, all play their part.

Lighting plays a starring role too. A series of teal ceramic table lamps with crisp white shades pepper the rooms, while the sculptural pendant above the dining table, which appears to be a Gregory Van Pelt Cardboard Pendant, becomes an understated focal point.

Some of our favourite details?

🪞 The mirrors that frame and reflect the shifting relationships.

🎨 The almost comical collection of blue-grey paint swatches on the wall. So many near-identical choices, yet still no decision.

🖼️ The eclectic gallery wall and inherited-looking artwork.

📚 Joe's cosy study, lined with books, which becomes one of the film's most inviting rooms.

🎼 A haunting cello score that carries much of the emotional tension beneath the sharp, witty dialogue.

We laughed out loud more than once, but one line earned the biggest cheer...

"I WANT ALL THE RUGS"

Us too.
