Philco Stereophonic portable record player

Director: James Mangold

An original Philco Stereophonic portable record player was used in Bob Dylans apartment in A Complete Unknown.

In researching items for the film, set decorator Regina Graves informs that it’s likely that Dylan had a Decca portable record player in the 1960s, see photos shown here, although the exact brand was never confirmed . “We needed a record player of that same era, one that was still in great shape and that was working as we needed to play records. It was a very hard task finding one with all those qualities. We eventually found one in pristine condition that looked quite similar. Sometimes we have to take those liberties on a period film. The one we bought and used in the film was a Philco Stereophonic portable. It had 2 speakers with it”.

The record player used in the film was a Philco Model G-1412.
