Barbie inspo! Now that Barbie has hit Prime Video, we took a good look at Barbie’s taste in decor for her house on Barbie Way, Barbie Land.

Barbie wakes up every morning in a beautiful bed with velvet clamshell headboard, and covered in a sequined bed spread with a careful scattering of round pink cushions. Find similar in the full article at FilmandFurniture.com (link in bio).

In Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, her Dreamhouse fea

In Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, her Dreamhouse features a walk-in wardrobe consisting of pre-coordinated outfits in display cases, which makes deciding what to wear a breeze, and on her dressing table sits a mesmerising mutli-coloured glass bowl which caught our eye. The bowl is a Madison crystal bowl, now available via our store (click on product links).

The kitchen area of Barbie’s open plan house features a breakfast bar surrounded by pink bar stools whose design is based on the Form barstool (also our own choice of bar stool for F&F HQ – in black. More in our feature at filmandfurniture.com, link in bio).

Pink trays stand on the bar with plastic glasses and straws ready for yet another party with the girls. These sit alongside a number of cyan, pink and yellow jugs.

The living area features a curved pink sofa, and a pink table lamp.

The open plan aspect reveals the garden and pool area, which feature double decker outdoor parasols in yellow and pink, and matching sun loungers. Looking at Slim Aarons famous midcentury Palm Springs photo Poolside Gossip (last slide) they’re almost identical!

Now that Barbie has hit Prime Video, we’ve taken a deep dive into Barbie’s taste in decor to show you the design influences and details of the film sets - and where you can find these pieces for a slice of Barbiecore in your own home.

What fun production designer Sarah Greenwood and set decorator Katie Spencer had bringing Greta Gerwig’s vision for the toy world of Barbie to life. Given that the first Barbie doll hit the market in 1959 and took hold throughout the 1960s, Barbie Land nods to Mid-Century design: The Dreamhouse itself is reminiscent of Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House built in Palm Springs. This house had a significant affect on many Palm Springs houses which share modernist design principals and aesthetics, and which Barbie Land references in it’s design.

The photography of Slim Aarons was also an influence: An evocative image which depicts the Kaufmann house at its height is Aarons’ famous photo Poolside Gossip.
A Mid-Century design icon, the Saarinen Tulip chair can be found around Barbie’s breakfast table – in pink of course.

Presenting the Mexican Copa Chabela Cuadrada (square glass) as seen in Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico

After receiving enquiries about the large, square, traditional Mexican beer glass in Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico (BBC2 programme) we went on a mission to track them down, eventually finding a small supplier in Mexico. Organising for this glassware to be sent over to the UK was a long journey in itself, but we are now proud to be (to the best of our knowledge) the only place in the UK to buy these traditional Mexican glasses which can be used for beer or as a dinner party starter or dessert glass.

Barware to be proud of and a conversation point in their own right, they are super thick glass with square with rounded corners, and are designed to keep the liquid contents cold. You can even put them in the freezer to cool the glass in order to keep the contents colder for longer.
Perfect for enjoying a cold one with some traditional Mexican tortillas or for another viewing of Rick Stein’s Road to Mexico.

The Playtime reference

The design of the Mattel offices in Barbie had us shuffling in our cinema seats. It bears more than a passing resemblance to the grey cubicles of the office in Jacques Tati’s Playtime of 1967.
Gerwig’s other film references were broad, from the 2005 animated film Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus to The Wizard of Oz, and from Pee-wee’s Big Adventure to Gene Kelly’s painter’s garret in An American in Paris.

2. A nod to Psycho

Weird Barbie’s house is made up of unusual angled blocks. Amongst other references, it was partly influenced by Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho – it sits on top of a hill and has a winding stair path leading up to it.
