Saarinen Executive chair and Saarinen Conference chair, with and without arms, various bases (new)

Designer: Eero Saarinen

Knoll

Directors: Stanley Kubrick, Greta Gerwig

If you’re a writer, a film lover, and you work from home, we can’t think of a better chair to own than the Saarinen Executive chair. Why? Because it’s the very same chair that appears in “HOME” – the house of writer Mr Alexander – in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.

You’ll spot the armchair version of this design classic in the unforgettable scene where Mr Alexander sits at his typewriter as Alex appears at the door, and again in the shocking moment when Alex and his droogs wreak havoc around the desk – and this very chair.

The Saarinen Conference chair, a variation of the chair with a distinctive swivel base, also makes a bold appearance in Barbie, seen in the Matell offices. Barbie actress Margot Robbie loved these chairs so much she kept some for her own office.

Originally designed by Eero Saarinen between 1946 and 1950 for luxury furniture manufacturer Knoll, the Saarinen Executive Chair has been a design icon for nearly 70 years. It was a staple of Florence Knoll’s interior schemes and remains one of Knoll’s most popular designs. Available with or without arms, and with tubular metal or wood legs, it’s as versatile as it is stylish.

The design journey of this chair began over a decade earlier, when Saarinen and Charles Eames submitted prototypes for the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA – winning first prize. These early experiments in fluid, sculptural forms laid the groundwork for Saarinen’s future classics: the Womb, Tulip, and Executive Chairs.

The moulded shell flexes slightly to accommodate the sitter, while the contoured seat, supported by elegant legs, offers ergonomic comfort. The chair’s organic curves mirror Saarinen’s later architectural forms – such as the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, whose domed glass wall echoes the shape of the Executive Chair’s backrest.

The Conference version encapsulates Saarinen’s revolutionary thinking: a supportive yet visually light design that brings both comfort and refinement to any setting. A favourite in offices around the world, it’s equally at home in a film set, a study, or a creative workspace.

Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer.
