Flashback to Alien: Covenant - a bloody horror with enough aliens, spaceships and gore to be keep the average cinema-goer suitably entertained, yet there is a philosophical heart to the movie which explores a deeper concept: Creativity.

The film opens with Weyland Corp’s synthetic David who we met in Prometheus (brilliantly – and camply – played by Michael Fassbender, who also plays Covenant’s new synthetic – Walter) sitting in a distinctive Carlo Bugatti Throne chair next to an Eileen Gray E1027 Side Table.

David recites his knowledge of the design and art pieces which inhabit the futuristic white room, to his creator Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce):
- The Carlo Bugatti chair
- a Steinway piano
- the painting The Nativity by Piero della Francesca (which, note, shows Mary kneeling in adoration before a newly-born Christ)
- the Michelangelo Renaissance marble sculpture…. you guessed it: David.
All exemplary in their relevant fields of art and design.

With a new American Psycho adaptation on the way, starring Austin Butler and directed by Luca Guadagnino, it’s a perfect moment to revisit Mary Harron’s 2000 cult classic. 💚 Wallpaper inspiration! In Atonement, the set design uses soft pastel tones to evoke a sense of nostalgia and innocence, particularly in the Tallis family home. The pale pink armchairs and cream-toned sofas create an atmosphere of pre-war elegance, mirroring the innocence that is lost as the story unfolds.

Stokesay Court, a grand Victorian mansion, served as the filming location, but when the crew arrived in the summer of 2006, the house was in dire need of refurbishment. The master bedroom suite, in particular, was in a poor state after being abandoned in 1911 and later used for furniture storage. For Briony’s room (played by a young Saoirse Ronan), the production design team selected new wallpaper, specially created in New York using a pattern from the archives.

The pastel palette softens the otherwise minimalist, functional elegance of mid-century modern furniture, turning Barbara Novak’s open plan living room into stylish haven that reflects the idealistic view of romance and independence at the heart of the film.
