A new face, a new life… but what about the interio A new face, a new life… but what about the interiors? 🌀

Screened last Sunday as part of @filmchelt2026’s AI strand, John Frankenheimer’s brilliant and influential Seconds (1966) is a psychological sci-fi thriller with extraordinary design to boot.

Arthur Hamilton’s well-to-do but stifling suburban family home makes his new Malibu beach house look like an escape into another world. Yet its promise of freedom soon feels suspect. The sinister offices of the company arranging his transformation, and a wildly distorted nightmare bedroom, make the architecture itself a source of dread.

Art director Ted Haworth, set decorator John P. Austin and cinematographer James Wong Howe create a world that feels wrong but deeply compelling at every angle.

Watching today, it brings the later A Clockwork Orange and Severance to mind: mind and body control, corporate menace and wonderfully unsettling interiors. There are echoes, too, in Get Out and Face/Off, with their disturbing possibilities for exchanging bodies and identities.

Essential viewing for anyone who likes their interiors with an existential crisis.

FilmChelt continues until Sunday 8 November. Links in bio under Website Features.

There's a fascinating symmetry at the heart of Making Marie Antoinette, the new documentary filmed by Eleanor Coppola during the production of her daughter @sofiacoppola's sumptuous 2006 film.

Marie Antoinette arrives at Versailles as a teenager, navigating an unfamiliar world of glamour, rigid protocol and overwhelming expectations.

Behind the camera, Sofia, then 34, is navigating a grand new world of her own, directing her most ambitious production to date at Versailles.

And watching it all unfold is her mother, Eleanor, capturing the extraordinary craftsmanship, personalities and moments behind the scenes.

One particularly touching detail: as a child, Sofia used to show Eleanor drawings of girls dressed as princesses. Years later, those childhood imaginings had become a magnificent film, and her mother was still there encouraging her, camera in hand.

Twenty years later, Sofia has helped bring her mother's documentary to the screen. ❤️

We attended Sofia's conversation at the BFI London Film Festival and watched the documentary, discovering fascinating stories behind the film's lavish interiors, furniture, costumes and production design.

Twenty years on, and Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoine Twenty years on, and Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette (2006) is still a glorious feast of interiors, furniture and decorative detail. 🌸👑

From exquisite floral wallpapers and gilded 18th-century furniture to embroidered silks, extravagant beds and enough macarons to feed the French court, almost every frame is a work of art.

Those beautiful interiors tell a story. Marie's magnificent ceremonial bedchamber becomes a gilded cage, where even getting dressed involves a bewildering hierarchy of court etiquette.

Now, the new documentary Making Marie Antoinette, filmed by Sofia's mother Eleanor Coppola, reveals the extraordinary craftsmanship behind this sumptuous world.

We attended @sofiacoppola's Screen Talk at the BFI London Film Festival with @edibow and watched the documentary, and have brought together some fascinating discoveries about the people, design and artistry behind those unforgettable images.
