Played convincingly and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">effervescently<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm5473782\/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taron Egerton<\/a> (who sings all songs himself)\u00a0John\u2019s life story takes us on a journey from his childhood home of Pinner, Middlesex in the mid-late 50s to his Los Angeles luxury home in the 80s, and everything in between. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"para-opener\"><span class=\"s1\">Film and Furniture\u2019s Paula Benson talked to Production Designer <a href=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/designer\/marcus-rowland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcus Rowland<\/a>\u00a0(<em>Scott Pilgrim vs the World<\/em>, <em>Baby Driver<\/em>, <em>Hot Fuzz<\/em>)\u00a0and Set Decorator <a href=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/designer\/jude-farr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jude Farr\u00a0<\/a>(<em>The Kings Speech<\/em>, <em>First They Killed My Father<\/em>, <em>American Sniper<\/em>, <em>My Week with Marilyn<\/em>)\u00a0about how they created the fascinating and varied <em>Rocketman<\/em> filmsets &#8211; and where to find similar home decor for your own home.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14085\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14085\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-14085\" src=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.imgix.net\/2019\/05\/Rocketman.jpg\" alt=\"Taron Egerton as Elton John in Rocketman filmsets\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Rocketman.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Rocketman-375x250.jpg 375w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Rocketman-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Rocketman-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taron Egerton as Elton John in<em> Rocketman<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"s3\"><em>Rocketman<\/em>\u00a0certainly isn&#8217;t a documentary, nor is it a traditional biopic. so I was intrigued to know if this is the way Rowland and Farr were briefed at the beginning of their work on the film. \u201cNot really, it wasn\u2019t billed that way, and when we first read the script it could have been taken in many different ways but what was pivotal to the way the film works, is that certain parts of Elton&#8217;s life are explained through the music, even though it\u2019s not chronologically accurate\u201d says Rowland.\u00a0The songs are incorporated, as Taron Egerton puts it\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s5\">&#8220;to express important beats in his life at emotional moments\u201d. The film acts as a kind of jukebox.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s7\">The film sets and the music (and editing of course) help drive the story and the pace as the film builds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Farr elaborates on this and tells me that at first she thought that the musical scenes needed to incorporate set dressing that fitted the relevant period of the song but quickly learned that the timing and integration of the music is a method of telling different parts of the story and so didn\u2019t need to get &#8216;hung up&#8217; on period detail in her choice of furniture and decor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Rowland says \u201cIn early meetings with director <a href=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/director\/dexter-fletcher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dexter Fletcher<\/a> [who was brought in to\u00a0direct <em><a href=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/film\/bohemian-rhapsody\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bohemian Rhapsody<\/a><\/em> after Bryan Singer was fired,\u00a0and who also directed <em>Eddie the Eagle<\/em> and was actor in <em>Press Gang<\/em>, <em>Caravaggio<\/em>, <em>Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels<\/em>], he made it clear we\u00a0didn\u2019t need to be bogged down by\u00a0\u2018authenticness\u2019 but to use the songs to evoke an emotion and drive the story from the childhood home to the more buoyant <em>Rocketman<\/em> filmsets such as the pub and the fairground\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14063\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14063\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-14063\" src=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.imgix.net\/2019\/05\/taron-egerton-rocketman-1550566175.jpg\" alt=\"Taron Egerton as Elton John playing piano in his parents house in Rocketman filmsets\" width=\"1200\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/taron-egerton-rocketman-1550566175.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/taron-egerton-rocketman-1550566175-375x155.jpg 375w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/taron-egerton-rocketman-1550566175-768x317.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/taron-egerton-rocketman-1550566175-1024x422.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/taron-egerton-rocketman-1550566175-600x248.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taron Egerton as Elton John playing piano in his parents house in <em>Rocketman<\/em>. Image c\/o Paramount Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"s8\">Rowland explains to me how it was an interesting brief for them as Production Designer and Set Decorator given the film jumps around from period to period, so they felt liberated to explore.\u00a0&#8220;It was nice to get the period bits in too, such as the childhood home of Pinner which is a little more grounded in reality, but then contrast this later in the film when we get a little more bonkers!\u201d exclaims Farr.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Elton John, born\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Reginald Kenneth Dwight,<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0has said that his\u00a0<\/span>ebullient\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">costumes\u00a0were a way of expressing himself after a restrictive childhood. These real life stage outfits were designed by\u00a0Bob Mackie, who was not\u00a0surprisingly\u00a0a big influence on the costumes for the film designed by Julian Day.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s9\">The costume and art departments were located close together for <em>Rocketman<\/em>. &#8220;I know what the costume department are doing and they know what we\u2019re doing so\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s8\">we were able to juxtapose the environments against the costumes in a fluid working process.\u00a0Take the orange dramatic devil costume for example, a very bright and visual statement in the opening scenes where\u00a0John\u00a0enters the rehab therapy room (set in 1990) and then in the street &#8211; we contrasted this with a relatively monochromatic background so in those types of scenes the character is more prominent\u201d says Rowland, \u201cso we use the tone of the film sets to try to emphasise the story at various points in the film and to help bring out Elton\u2019s mindset and personality\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><em>Rocketman<\/em>\u00a0was filmed entirely in the UK. We used a subdued palette but made it visually appealing\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">We spotted details in the kitchen such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/product\/brown-betty-teapot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brown betty teapot<\/a> (a type of round teapot with a manganese brown glaze known as Rockingham glaze), the 1950s style fridge and the <a href=\"http:\/\/tidd.ly\/f6c2899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enamel bread bin<\/a>. &#8220;We hired various pieces from prop houses but as they are old looking by their very nature, some pieces needed some attention &#8211; like adding a new formica worktop to the kitchen units to make them look newer or re-laquering or repainting pieces\u201d says Farr.\u00a0\u201cIt&#8217;s also about unifying the look as you\u00a0don\u2019t want it to end up looking like lots of disparate bits and pieces\u201d says Rowland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14057\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-14057\" src=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.imgix.net\/2019\/05\/pinner-kitchen-bread-bin-film-and-furniture-crop.jpg\" alt=\"The 1950s fridge and the enamel bread bin take pride of place in Elton John's Pinner home in Rocketman filmsets\" width=\"800\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/pinner-kitchen-bread-bin-film-and-furniture-crop.jpg 927w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/pinner-kitchen-bread-bin-film-and-furniture-crop-375x233.jpg 375w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/pinner-kitchen-bread-bin-film-and-furniture-crop-768x476.jpg 768w, https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/pinner-kitchen-bread-bin-film-and-furniture-crop-600x372.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 1950s fridge and the enamel bread bin take pride of place in Elton John&#8217;s Mother&#8217;s (<span class=\"itemprop\">Bryce Dallas Howard)\u00a0<\/span>Pinner home in <em>Rocketman<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">We\u2019re big fans of <a href=\"https:\/\/filmandfurniture.com\/?s=wallpaper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wallpaper in film<\/a> here at Film and Furniture (we take great pleasure from identifying these details) so we were delighted to see both Rowland and Farr get quite animated when we asked about the wallpaper in this house:\u00a0&#8220;The wallpaper is real paper from the period, but sourcing authentic wallpaper which\u00a0isn\u2019t just one roll\u00a0isn\u2019t always easy and especially difficult when wallpaper from this period comes with awkward edging that needs to be cut off, it rips really easily and its just very fiddly &#8211; our decorators hate it\u201d says Farr. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;We like to source from the period as the texture and depth makes a big difference rather than designing it and printing it up new which can look a little soulless\u201d she adds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Wallpaper can actually make a huge difference to the look and feel of a set. The bedhead it transpires was a gold inlaid screen which Farr found at a hire company, and the bedside lights were from Modern Props.
