Tugendhat / Barcelona coffee table by Mies van der Rohe (vintage)

Designer: Mies Van der Rohe

Knoll

Directors: Zack Snyder, Julius Sevcik

Designed by Mies van der Rohe, the Tugendhat coffee table is modernism epitomised and a fine choice for Bruce Wayne’s lake house in Batman v Superman.

This coffee table was designed in 1929-1930, for the Villa Tugendhat, although it is sometimes referred to as the Barcelona table. As with the Barcelona chair, the characteristic cross dominates the base, however the crossed flat steel is employed differently. In this case it is more reminiscent of Mies van der Rohes use of steel frames in his architectural projects.

In 1931, Bamberg supplied the table as a high version with nickel-plated or lacquered base and a choice of glass, black glass or rosewood top. Knoll manufactured this table from 1948 onwards and since 1964 the base has been made of stainless steel. This polished stainless steel coffee table has a new glass top and is still in excellent vintage condition.
